This room contains John Gary’s funeral announcement and pictures of him and his wife, Eliza. The portraits on the wall are of Mr. Gary’s daughters, Eugenia and Pernecia, who both died of consumption (tuberculosis). The portraits were donated to Merrehope after Hurricane Camille in 1971. It is said that is when Eugenia’s ghost began to appear to some in Merrehope.
The dress with the red cape is memorabilia from the Meridian Junior Auxiliary (JA), a long-standing community service organization. Most JA members were Merrehope supporters.
